Can you guys believe it's June already?! Freaky. Especially because it means that my birthday is in two weeks, and another year has basically flown by. It's Wednesday, which means that it's time for Picks on Paper. However, I decided that I was going to mix it up a little bit this week and make my Picks a little more personal. Why? Because I don't reveal too much about myself often, and I think that it's about time that I start! I tend to be shy, so writing about myself is a little more difficult than writing about weddings as usual, but I'm making it a personal goal to allow you guys to get to know me better from now on.
This week's Picks on Paper is all about my favorite things. I know it's supposed to be only five things, but I simply couldn't narrow down all of the cool stuff any further, so I'm grouping together my favorite things into five categories: Accessories, Yummy Treats, Gadgets, Comfy Cozy Items and Entertainment.
Tory Burch Miller Thong, Claddagh Ring, Laura Mercier's Tinted Moisturizer, Moet & Chandon Nectar Imperial Rose, Lenovo Ideapad, Magic Bullet, Smoothie, Body by Victoria Hiphuggers and Sex and the City DVD set.
Silver Tory Burch Sandals. I bought a pair of Tori Burch Miller Thongs when I was in college, and I have been obsessed with them ever since. I wear them constantly and it makes me sad to see them slowly wearing out! I'll give it to Tory Burch - it's been at least five years, and they're not even close to falling apart. The silver color is pretty much rubbed off though. For the past year or so, I've been keeping an eye out for them, and waiting for them to go on sale. But 1) I have yet to find a silver pair in my size and 2) they're never on sale. Now, I'm at the point where I'll buy them at full price, if I can just find them!!! I couldn't even find an online retailer for the purposes of this post!
Claddagh Ring. Dale bought me a traditional Irish Claddagh ring several years ago in a little shop by the pier. We had started dating a couple of months prior, and I remember that it meant so much to me that he gave it to me. I tend to lose stuff (I actually lost another ring he gave me a while back because it was too big for my finger, and I will never live it down), so I was determined to keep this ring forever. I wore it every day for years, throughout our relationship, and only stopped wearing it on a daily basis when Dale gave me another very special ring ;) I imagine giving it to one of my kids one day to keep.
Trader Joe's Vanilla Almond Clusters cereal. I never miss breakfast. It's my favorite meal of the day and I have a particular fondness for cereal with lots of ice cold milk. My favorite cereal in the whole world is Vanilla Almond Clusters cereal at Trader Joe's. I will go out of my way to drop by Trader Joe's just to get more of it, and I buy at least two boxes each time I go. I will literally eat it for breakfast and lunch every day of the week. I'm obsessed, and I could never get sick of it!
Champagne. I discovered my love of champagne while at my last job at a public relations agency. One of our clients was Moet & Chandon, and I definitely had my fill of the bubbly for months and months. My favorite variety is Moet's Nectar Imperial Rose, which is a sweeter pink champagne that has a little more of a tropical flavor to it than a typical pink champagne (or a Rose). It's a bit pricey, though, so Dale and I will usually go for a bottle of Chandon, which is technically a sparkling wine, but costs less than $20 and is usually pretty easy to find at the grocery store. We actually shared a bottle of Chandon right after we got married, so we plan to celebrate each anniversary with a bottle. One last tip? Always have a bottle of champagne in your fridge - you never know when you'll need to celebrate! ;)
Laptop. My husband Dale actually gave me a Lenovo Ideapad 560 i7 for my (upcoming) birthday, and I absolutely LOVE it. It's so nice being able to venture away from my desk every now and then, and not having to worry about having to work off of my iPhone while on vacation. I used to own an Apple iBook in college, and while I loved it, I decided to switch back to a PC because I would have had to buy all of my design software brand new for an Apple. Dale was also happy to see me switch back...he's a software engineer and a master of the PC, but he knows very little about how Apple computers work. It's a great computer, and most importantly, it doesn't get super hot sitting on my lap!
My Magic Bullet. We got a Magic Bullet as a wedding gift off our registry last year, and I have to say, it is the best appliance in our kitchen. I've always been less than impressed with a typical blender's ability to make a good smoothie, but this little thing really does the job! I think it's a bit too strong to just chop veggies (it basically turns onion to mush), but it's a great tool when you want to turn solids into a liquid. It never burns out like other blenders often do, and I make smoothies all the time now! My favorite smoothie recipe (which I sort of made up myself), is 0.5 cups blueberries, half of a ripe, medium sized banana, 0.25 cup lowfat vanilla yogurt, 1 cup of milk (or less depending on how thick you like your smoothie), a couple tablespoons of protein powder and fiber powder and one packet of Splenda.
Comfy Cozy Items
Softest. Underwear. Ever. Enough said. As much as I try to go for the "sexier" options over at Victoria's Secret, I just can't resist the comfier pairs nine times out of ten!
Laura Mercier's Tinted Moisturizer. I would categorize myself as a "Girl's girl," but I've never been very interested in makeup beyond what I wear on a daily basis. I hate touching up throughout the day...whatever I put on in the morning, is usually what's there in the evening...I just like to put on my makeup and be done with it. I used to wear heavier foundation every day, but I always hated how greasy and thick it was, and I honestly didn't think I needed to wear so much makeup on a daily basis. I read about Laura Mercier's Tinted Moisturizer in a magazine a couple years ago, and I've used it as my foundation ever since. It's a great base for days that I'm planning on putting on a full face of makeup, and it's also great to have around on the days when I don't feel up to putting on any makeup at all! While it can be a bit pricey for makeup, one bottle lasts several months for me, so I don't have to purchase it too often.
Old TV. I love TV and I'm not at all ashamed to admit it! One of Dale's and my favorite things to do at home is watch reruns. We'll look for TV shows that others have recommended in the past, and watch the episodes one after another (which is SO much better than having to wait a week in between each one, in my opinion). We just finished watching "The Sopranos" recently, we're all caught up on "Californication," "Dexter," "United States of Tara" and "True Blood," among many others. Two of my personal favorites of all time are "Friends" and "Sex and the City". As much as I miss Dale when he is out of town (like he is this week), I'm always happy to pull out my old, worn and torn DVDs and watch them in bed. I could literally watch them over and over again...I used to, until Dale started leaving the room whenever I popped a disc in the DVD player. But when he's gone, I like to fall asleep to the laughter and witty banter of Ross, Monica, Rachel, Joey, Chandler and Phoebe, Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Samantha.
