Maybe it's just me, but I was really shocked to hear that this was a DIY wedding. The pure elegance of the day, with a contemporary mustard yellow and grey color palette, classic white florals and gorgeous outdoor venue made me think it was a high budget, professionally executed affair. This wedding is a great example of what a couple of talented people can do when they have the support of friends and family. I think that it can be easy to go "over the top" when planning the decor for a wedding, because there are just so many possibilities and creative ideas out there, and you usually don't get to see everything come together until the day of. It may sound strange, but I think what I love most about this wedding is its use of restraint. It's simple, elegant, refined and very tasteful.
Heather and Michael worked closely with their family and friends to plan a wedding that was warm and comfortable, and one that showcased the natural beauty of the Sonoma wine country venue. In the months leading up to their big day, the couple covered their walls with to-do lists written out on butcher paper, and recruited their family and friends to help them get it all done. A close friend of the couple was ordained in order to marry Heather and Michael, which made the wedding ceremony all the more intimate. Friends and family helped collect over 1,000 glass jars to create the candlelit background at their reception, and Heather's mom and a close family friend sewed a delicate scalloped border to softened burlap fabric to create the simple, rustic table runners. The morning before the wedding, Heather and a few of her bridesmaids collected large bundles of elegant white flowers at the flower market in San Francisco to make all of the bouquets and boutonnieres for the wedding party, and some of the centerpieces placed inside glass mason jars.
The outdoor reception lasted into the evening, as guests danced on the patio, taking breaks every once in a while to play rounds of bocce ball. A dessert table was set up with an array of homemade sweets including French macaroons, white chocolate cake balls, cheesecake and chocolate dipped rice crispy treats brought by close family and friends. The charming one layer, round wedding cake was a super yummy vanilla cake with a coconut custard filling and coconut buttercream frosting, which, of course, was made by one of Heather's bridesmaids!
The elegant event was shot by Hendrickson Photography Weddings, and as you will soon see, it is simply gorgeous!
