Our Holiday Baby Gender Reveal Friday, December 7, 2012 ~ 11:45 a.m. It's a boy!

I had a feeling it was all along, and it is...it's a BOY! Everyone kept telling me it was a girl, but I had it in my head that it was a boy. Up until we had our first 20 week ultrasound, that is. Now, this is a crazy story. As I've mentioned before, I was out in California visiting my family for the Thanksgiving holiday for two weeks last month. My mom is actually a Labor & Delivery nurse out there, so we thought that instead of waiting for our official 20 week ultrasound at our regular doctor here in Denver, my mom would set up a time for me to get scanned at her hospital. She asked one of her favorite doctors there to perform the ultrasound, and we invited our closest family and friends in California to come along so we could all find out together. Dale even had his parents on the phone listening, since they unfortunately couldn't be there with us in person.

Honestly, It was and still is one of the most special moments of my life, having everyone I loved gathered close around the ultrasound machine, staring at our little baby on the screen, anxiously waiting to hear whether it was a boy or a girl. It seemed like it took forever for the doctor to say something until finally, he said, "I'm pretty sure it's a girl!" The room erupted with excitement, as about half of the people in the room said, "I knew it!" I couldn't believe it, myself! I had it in my head that I was having a boy the entire pregnancy; my husband kept having dreams that it was a girl. I remember feeling this huge rush of excitement and emotion all at once...tears filled my eyes, and I had to stop myself from sobbing just for a moment.

Just then, my mom says, "Wait, do we know what it is?" If you know my mom, you know just how classic this is. Hilarious. The entire room erupted in laughter, as someone repeated the news that it was a girl, like my mom had originally predicted. After the intial excitement died down, the doctor clarified further that he was about 65% sure that it was a girl. Our baby's legs were closed a little bit, and while he couldn't see anything obvious in between her legs, he also couldn't be absolutely sure that there wasn't anything there, either. So we happily left that night thinking that it was more than likely a girl, but we weren't 100% sure just yet.

For the last week of our trip there in California, I restrained myself from going crazy with the pink baby stuff, and just added a few things here and there to our baby registries. Dale and I figured that our official 20 week ultrasound, which was scheduled for the morning after we returned to Denver, would confirm our news, and then we could rest assured that we knew our baby's gender for sure. Well, not so much. That morning in Denver, we excitedly stared at the larger and clearer ultrasound screen on the wall in my doctor's office, waiting to hear for sure that it was, in fact, a girl. The sonographer asked us what we thought it was, and my husband confidently proclaimed that we thought it was a girl and I happily agreed. Only then did she tell us that our baby definitely wasn't shy that morning, and we were having a BOY! We were both shocked, and I think Dale was watching me extra closely to see if I was going to cry right there in disappointment. I didn't, of course :) I was just shocked. At first, I think I just kept waiting for the sonographer to correct herself and say that she was wrong, but then there it was, in plain sight. His little peeper sticking out, plain as day...he was letting us know that he definitely was not a girl!

How did I feel? Honestly, I don't really know! I think I was so surprised, I wasn't sure how to react. Dale and I had spent a week thinking that we were having a girl, and then all of a sudden, we weren't! What's so crazy about it is that I was convinced that I was having a boy the entire pregnancy, until the doctor told us we were having a girl. Then, I let myself start thinking about all of the wonderful things about having a girl instead...a week later, it was back to a boy again. Our emotions were all over the place that day, until the news really sank in, and we began to embrace the idea of having a boy again.

I was excited yet again, and I started thinking about how I would reveal the baby's gender to you guys and to the rest of my friends and family. Since it is the holiday season, I thought that a Christmas shoot would be perfect! I began collecting blue Christmas props (MUCH easier to find than pink items, let me just say!), and then my good friend Christina of BrideInspired Wedding Photography kindly took the photos for us last week! We love how they turned out!

Congrats!!! I've loved having a little boy so much I'm totally cool with having another one next time around. I'm convinced they are more low key and better sleepers, but maybe that was just my boy. So excited for you!

As a side note, is your mom a L&D nurse in the LA area? I didn't love my hospital/labor experience the first time around and want to look into somewhere else next time (whenever that is!)

congrats again!
