According to their photographer, Casey Connell, today's couple, Michelle and Mathias are the "epitome of the old adage, 'Absence makes the heart grow fonder.' Mathias is Austrian, and the two met while he was attending college here in the states. After graduation, he left to play professional hockey back home in Europe, and Michelle had a job and a family here...the two have made the long distance relationship an art form. During hockey season, Mathias lives in Germany and sees his family in Austria frequently, and Michelle visits as often as she can. During the off-season, the two share an apartment in NYC. There are undoubtedly some serious perks to this arrangement...They spent their first New Year's Eve as a married couple in the Alps!"
Although the distance did prove to be a challenge while wedding planning, the couple made sure that they recognized Mathias' Austrian culture and his family traveling the long distance to New York. Michelle wanted to incorporate as many Austrain details as she could, from the "Danke Schoen" sign that greeted guests, to the Viennese Waltz, and the toasts in both German and English. The wedding was held at a penthouse restaurant overlooking the city of Albany, with pretty pink and white hydrangeas, peonies and roses everywhere. There was a definite glam factor in this wedding, as well, with the groomsmen dressed in tuxedos and the bridesmaids in long gray gowns, and the tall silver and crystal pieces that topped each of the reception tables.
After planning such a beautiful wedding on her own, Michelle was kind enough to share some advice with anyone else out there planning right now! "1) Get the stationary (invitations, programs, menus) done early because it takes longer than you think. 2) If you have some extra money, hire a day-of wedding coordinator. I did not hire one, and regret it. If you do not have the funds, ask a friend to help out with some of the day-of tasks. 3) When trying on wedding dresses, think if the dress is something comfortable enough to wear for an entire day," Very specific, great advice!
