Bridal Fitness - New Year's Resolutions Monday, January 7, 2013 ~ 7:30 a.m.

Prenatal fitness goals Monday, Monday, yet again! But this Monday is different because Bridal Fitness is officially back! I know that I've been slacking on the fitness front, but hey, it was the holidays...didn't we all slack off just a bit? Not to mention the fact that I am definitely pregnant, which has slowed me down significantly. At just about 6 months along now, I'm no longer in that, "Hey, do you think that chick is pregnant, or just carrying some weight up front?" stage. These days, I am feeling full blown BIG and PREGNANT. Now, having been sick and miserable for the first few months of my pregnancy, I can appreciate the fact that I'm feeling good, atleast. But then again, the aches and pains are definitely setting in. You just can't gain such a significant amount of weight without feeling it there hanging on your bones, you know?

With these changes in my body, I've been trying to get creative with how to deal with the extra aches and pains. I know that I've mentioned before that yoga has become my new best friend. I was never hugely into yoga before, but now, I find it's one of the only things I can do anywhere that stretches me out in all of the right places. Not only that, but I find that flowing through the yoga poses continuously gets my blood pumping and gives my arms a nice little workout while I'm at it. Usually, I'll just cycle through a standard sun salutation five times, taking my time moving through the stretches. Sometimes if I'm feeling extra energetic, I'll even throw in a few pushups before moving into my downward dog. For any of my fellow pregnant ladies out there, I highly recommend trying it. The trick is to keep it simple; don't treat it like an intense 30 minute workout unless you really want to, otherwise you won't do it enough. Oh, and avoid the whole laying on your belly part, too!

Stretching and completing a mini yoga session at least 3 times per week is my first New Year's Resolution as a pregnant lady. I added, "As a pregnant lady," there because I know that once I actually have the baby in April, these goals could certainly change quite a bit. But for now, these are my big fitness resolutions heading into 2013:

  • Complete a mini yoga session at least three times per week
  • Walk at least 30 minutes everyday.
  • Do kegel exercises every single day!

I'm not sure the kegels are really a fitness resolution, but they are exercises, and I know that I haven't been doing them nearly enough. If you're unfamiliar with how to strengthen those ever-important kegels, you should definitely go and learn more about them over on BabyCenter - whether you're pregnant or not. BabyCenter advises working up to doing three or four sets of ten, about three times a day, which seems like you'd be doing them all day long, but whatever...I can try!

As for the walking, this one is pretty self explanatory. I've still been making it to the gym a few times a week, but lately, I've really been trying to just make sure that I at least go for a walk every day. Because the further along I get into my pregnancy, the more I realize that I'm going to be more successful if I try to incorporate low impact physical activity into my everyday routine instead of pushing myself harder at the gym like I used to. Going to the gym and sweating my brains out or completing a P90X workout just isn't realistic (or safe) for me anymore, so I'm having to go a different route with my fitness routine these days. It has been harder than I thought to make sure I walk everyday though! It has been pretty cold outside these days, and making sure I get out there before the sun goes down has been tricky, but I'm determined to do it every day. Walking isn't easy while pregnant, either! Some days, it's downright painful walking with my achy back and hips...I just hope the positives outweigh the negatives.

Anyway, those are my New Year's resolutions! I'm a little late getting to them because I really had to approach these differently than I usually do, but I'm going to work on achieving these resolutions just the same!
