I'm sure if you ask any blogger, he or she would tell you that one of the hardest things to do is to write about something personal. I can write about flowers and wedding invitations all day long, but ask me to sit down and discuss my wedding, and I draw a complete blank! Strangely enough, when I got married in 2011, I pretty much avoided blogging about it in any sort of real detail once the planning was complete. And now, a little over 4.5 years later, I'm sitting down to write about my little brother's engagement, which is also proving to be difficult!
Today's featured engagement shoot, beautifully captured by A. Blake Photography, is very special to me because it features my little brother, Chris and his too-stinking-pretty-and-sweet fiance, Amy. These two first met in college in San Luis Obispo, California, and returned to the small coastal town for their engagement this past summer. Not only is the town a special part of their relationship, but so is the beach! My brother is a die-hard surfer, and while he learned to surf in the warmer waters in SoCal, he continues to brave the much chillier tides up in San Francisco as much as he possibly can.
When Chris first started surfing, I had no idea it would "stick" the way that it has. Growing up with Chris, I got used to his cycle of obsessions. There was the Lego city that encompassed his entire bedroom floor, the dinosaurs, Spiderman comics, Star Wars fandom, skateboarding and yes - the one he will never live down, the Michael Jackson obsession. As a child, when he found something that he loved, he fell hard and held onto it for dear life - living and breathing it as much as our mom could allow. As he grew up, his love of surfing stayed true, much in the same way his love for Amy has.
Amy has always let Chris be Chris. Whether it is hanging his many surfboards on the wall of their San Francisco apartment; running alongside him during crazy overnight relay races; or agreeing to inherit the obscenely large turtles that he fell in love with while in high school (and currently reside in our parents' backyard). Being raised by a strong single mother and a bossy older sister, I think that Chris needs Amy's unwavering support and acceptance more than anything else.
Watching Chris and Amy together, I have no doubt that they have nothing but unconditional love for each other. Personally, I think that the real beauty in their relationship is that they are always having fun, always laughing and exploring new things together. I hope that they never lose that as they build a life together. They are set to be married next September (with my little man as their ring bearer), and I'm very anxious to see their little family begin to grow - with lots of little nieces and nephews for me!!! :)
